some comments and suggestions

just a few comments on my first impression. please take it not as ungreatfull but as positive criticism.

  • browsing feels very sluggish and slow. i get many server unreachable errors. especially if browsing down to the track level

  • randomly the library level disappears. clicking on plex goes directly to one of my three music librarys instead to the library selection. cu

  • please add support for the getScrollIndices call. it will allow to use letter shortcut keys to jump directly to the items starting with this letter

  • please revisit your scrolling implementation. for example if the user scrolls very fast to line 200 of a list plex should directly return the data for line 200+ and skip all lines before. this will speed up browsing immensely.

  • i habe lots of

errors on my ds 1813+. maybe this is one of the reasons for the sluggish performance

  • please add a local only access option (if this is permitted by the sonos terms) so that access also works if the internet is down. it should also be much faster. my proof of concept implementation is as fast as the sonos media library. the current plex version is much slower.

again: please don't get me wrong. i just want the implementation to be as good as possible so that plex can really shine with this. it is a really great feature that deserves a great working implementation. and i know it can be done as i did id myself. at least as a proof of concept.

Cannot browse music library

I have successfully linked my Plex account with Sonos. When I try to browse the Plex media library nothing happens for a long while and then it times out with a 'Unable to contact the Plex Media Server' error.

I have multiple users set up and running all with Pin numbers to ensure content restrictions across the various children in the house! Could this be the issue - it doesn't know which account and pin to use - it's never asked?

Playing Albums not working

From the Sonos iOS app, playing individual tracks works, they are transcoded and play. Selecting "Complete Album" however does not tell the Plex Server to transcode and it sends the native audio files to Sonos which it cannot play as they are in the wrong format.

Before I let Plex manage my large music library, I'd like to know if a Plex Pass is required to test all features of the beta like Plex mix?

How do I troubleshoot the Plex-Sonos integration?

$

Hello all, I am looking for some tips on troubleshooting.

Here is my setup and what I have done so far
• Plex Pass customer
• Have been running remote access (video and audio) successfully since they came out with the cert solution
• Running latest version of plex server on a Mac mini (I have been doing in place upgrades for a long time)
• Purchased a WD Passport Wireless Pro recently (because of the Plex server in it)
• Have a few Sonos speakers
• I have use other beta Sonos services in the past without issues (other than beta bugs)
• I am not sure when I created my music library in Plex but it was a while ago (probably before some of the new music library features.
• I have a music library that is pretty large (Too large for Sonos… Grrr)

Needless to say because of the last bullet I was very happy when I saw the Sonos-Plex announcement. I added the beta Plex service to my Sonos, went through the authorization then selected my Plex server from within the Sonos app. It slowly started populating the artists (names and albums only no metadata or pictures etc.), but when I would select something to play I got the very common error about not being able to connect to the server.

So now comes the troubleshooting part. I was not sure where to start really. Unlike some of the other posts my remote access has been working just fine for a long time. So I started down the patch of trying to rule things out one at a time. Since my remote access has been working fine I am assuming (yes I know what happens when one assumes) my router config was probably correct. So I thought about it and spun up my WD Passport to see if I could have any better luck with it. First thing I did was update the Plex Server on it to the latest version. Then I copied some music to the WD drive and went into the WD Plex server and setup a new music library. I let it finish downloading all the metadata then went to my Sonos app and selected the WD based library, which is on the same home network as my mac based Plex server, then selected a song and the seas parted, the skies cried and music from my WD Plex server started coming out of my Sonos speaker. My faith has been restored! However now I am left with the challenge of trying to figure out the differences between my mac based Plex server and my WD Passport Plex Server and why does one work when the other doesn't.

Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips that they can share to help me figure this out? A couple more observations:

• I think there are some new options when setting up a music library vs when I originally set mine up (Not sure if my old library automatically gets those new features)
• I did try to setup a new music library on my mac Plex Server just to make sure the issue wasn't in the way the library was created (long ago vs new)
• Metadata (pictures etc) come up in the Plex web app from my mac based music library, but not within the Sonos app. Metadata does show up when I select music coming from the WD based library and in the web app
• The WD Passport connects to my home WiFi (same network as the mac based Plex server and Sonos). I never made any changes to my router to accommodate the WD Passport Plex Server
• Other than this I have no issues with my Plex Server, I love the platform! Now I am just waiting for the Amazon Echo integration and I will be in Plex heaven! Well there is one thing that still bugs me……. We still don't have a solution for including the captured videos from my phone as well as the pictures in the camera upload. Sorry I had to put that dig in there. Just insane that we still don't have that capability. But other than that I love it!!!!!

So if anyone out there has any thoughts about how to further troubleshoot this issue please let me know. I have looked at the logs, but not really sure what I am looking at or for.

Does it do gapless playback?

a few things (WMA and search/sorts)

my take so far

1 searching and music libraries
i have a great deal of music (classical, opera, chamber) recordings (not commercial) which i have set up in various libraries in Plex. The few ID3 fields available in Plex limit how much detail can be provided for these recordings for library creation and sorting/filtering etc. i had finally set up all these to work beautifully with Plex via web and mobile apps. (i use a combo of folders and ID3 tags) It took several different iterations over the years to come up with a method that works without a lot of retagging of files once the libraries were set up. (Mp3tag is a great help in this IMHO)

i also have a great deal of other audio recordings (think radio shows); these work a bit better as they can be treated like a tv show - season and episode etc.

whats missing for me in the SONOS Beta is the FOLDER search/sort feature. I really rely on that one especially for classical music and yes i have album and artist tags set up.

I do hope that will be coming... even SONOS has it for its Music Library.

2 formats: wma
hmm. so i can play WMA in Plex (web and iOS) but not on Sonos?
or not consistently

although Sonos says it should
https://sonos.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/80/~/supported-audio-formats?_ga=1.4845619.1415695127.1467594463

Now i am surprised that wma is playing at all on Plex because according to this page for Plex
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/203810286-What-media-formats-are-supported-

its not listed but it does play via web and mobile.

Today i tried an opera recording listed in my Plex and it would not play on SONOS. i checked and it would play on my iPad and then i went back to Sonos and no go. So i checked the file format and it was .wma. now i am confused that it played at all in Plex.

and of course later the same file played fine in SONOS.

i am converting a few of these .wma files (i actually dont have that many - mostly have mp3) to see how that works (using Total Recorder which is a great product IMHO).

but am confused - should WMA be playing from Plex to Sonos?
and why is it playing at all in Plex if its not supposed to...
and why does the WMA files play sometimes in Sonos and sometimes not?

curious but still VERY HAPPY with the SONOS PLEX integration!

Working with My SonicWALL but no Plex Mix

After some tinkering, I have the setup working with my SonicWALL TZ400. I can play music, playlist, browse the collection and see album art work.

BUT when I try to "start plex mix radio", it errors with message Unable to play plex mix, connection to server was lost.

Aside from plex mix, it is working well.

Not Working

Have just set this up, not really working for me. Anybody had much luck ?

I can browse into my library but as soon as i click on artist or playlist 99% of the time it just says it cannot connect to the server. Occasionally i do get a list back though.

If i search in the search box for an artist they are found and displayed slightly more often, but wholly unreliable.

Cant wait for it to be working properly though. It might just make me stay with Plex Pass !

Full Support for DSD Files (.dsf) and tags

Great that Sonos and Plex have come together! Finally!

It appears that Plex does transcode my DSD files (I use .dsf as it supports ID3v2 tags) and it plays them via my Plex Android app. I don't get the transcoding and playback, however, to Sonos. My high bitrate FLAC files do work. Is this something to come? Ideally, Plex should convert all FLAC, DSD, PCM, etc to simple CD standard for Sonos.

Also, please let Plex respect embedded tags in .dsf files. This includes the folder/cover art as well. Can it also look at the "folder.jpg" too in a directory and grab that? My stuff is tagged completely and Plex seems to ignore it.

Kev.

When playing a track from a "Various Artists" album plex sends the wrong artist tag to Sonos

$

0

I you are playing a track from a "Various Artist" album you expect to see the tag from the ARTIST field be displayed in the sonos player so that you can see the artist.

But as of today the tag ALBUM ARTIST is displayed.

On a Various Artist album the ARTIST tag will be the actual artist for each track and the tag ALBUM ARTIST will be "Various Artists" for the whole album.

Playing the same track from the same album through Subsonic on Sonos will display the correct tag I.E. the ARTIST tag.

Feature requests

Thank you for creating Plex on Sonos! I have some requests having used the player briefly today.

  1. Please add a persistent notification for the android app. When I play music and then go to the home screen, there is no evidence that Sonos is playing; I have to open the app from the app drawer again. This also means that there are no lockscreen controls.
  2. Please update the playing/played status. Currently the Recently Played function is not updated.
  3. Please allow the Discover function to be added to Sonos favourites. The Playlists function can be added and I find it useful.
  4. The Live Mix option seems to be limited to about 25 tracks and it returns to the first track once it reaches the end, whereas the option from within Plex includes 100 tracks in the mix.
  5. Selection by Genre
  6. Selection of Artist by letter of the alphabet
  7. Selection by Directory/Folder
  8. Search/sort by folder
  9. Search/sort by genre
  10. More robust ID3 tagging and conversion table (like how are you creating track artist?)

Sonos Plex Integration defaults to old server

$

I've recently built a new Plex Server. (I know there is probably an easy way for copy across the settings) but I started from scratch using Windows instead of Linux.

My main problem is that when I navigate to Plex in Sonos it is defaulting to the old Server and this doesn't work. I need to Navigate to Other Libraries and specify the new server.

How can I fix this? I've removed the old server from the Plex Console so I though that would have fixed this.

Thanks

Setting up Plex/Sonos with Airport Extreme and Sonos Bridge?

$

0

Hello fellow Plexers,
Exciting news with the Plex meets Sonos feature... I intend to set this up but run into an issue. I have a Sonos bridge connected directly to my Airport Extreme router, and Sonos Bridge instructions indicate to set the router in bridge mode. This seems to prohibit me from getting Remote Access configured ('Not available outside your network' message; Private and Public indicate unkown IP). And a router in bridge mode appears to restrict me from setting up port forwarding and DHCP reservations. Anyone out there encountered and resolved this?
Thanks, Matthew

Lost connection

I can access my Plex media library from my Sonos apps, but whenever I want to play something, whether from the Sonos Windows app or Android app, it is rolling with no sound for a few seconds then I have the message "Unable to play 'Title of the song' - the connection to Plex was lost."

how to run FLAC 96000 HZ on Sonos?

Hey there, question is in the title. I am not able to get high quality audio files running on my sonos system. Failure notice: " not supported sampling rate 96000 HZ"

So what can I do to get them converted without significant lose of quality? Is it even possible to convert them, because I even could not handle that...

I am using the most actual PMS on a 5k iMac. Files are visible in the sonos system....
thanks guys

First impressions

First of all; I really love my two favorite systems coming together!

System:

  • 2x Sonos Play 5 Generation 1
  • 1x Sonos Connect
  • Plex server v1.0.2.2413 on Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Various Plex clients, for this test a Sony Xperia X (F5121) on Android v6.0.1 running Plex v4.28.2.249

Installation went fine without any problems. I’m already set to use beta in Sonos & my Plex is set to remotely be controlled. Navigation in the Plex client is fairly smooth (the same as any other Plex client in the house when browsing though movies). I was really happy to see that the band/artist finally having a thumbnail, being unhealthy fixating on such bling, this made me very happy. The happiness resulting in me removing my Music library setup on Sonos since the Plex client is doing a better job. The only problem with this is that I have to set it up again if we would have an Internet outage. We rarely have those but I feel better having a fall-back plan.

Most of my library is 16 Bit FLAC ripped from my former CD collection & it seems to stream fine on all Sonos hosts. I will continue to test a bit more thorough in the coming weeks. I did not take the time to do a network analysis of the traffic or check the Plex logs; do anyone know if the Plex server do a direct stream not altering the FLAC stream? I will test using a 24 Bit FLAC & see if it trancode to 16 Bit, something I find limiting with my Sonos (a lot of indie produced music is in 24 Bit).

Tracking what's playing in Status or PlexPy

It would be great to know what's playing where in the Plex Media Server status page or PlexPy. Also, maybe tell us in the information tab at what bitrate it's streaming.

I'm having lots of fun with Plex in Sonos. Thanks for the hard work.

Advanced NAT setting may need to be set for pfSense

$

0

If you use pfSense as your router, you might need to adjust an advanced NAT setting in order for Sonos devices to be able to communicate with a Plex server on the same network. There's a chance this might also apply to other advanced router/firewall software, but I don't know that for sure.

You'll need to use a manual port forwarding/NAT rule rather than UPnP. In that NAT rule, you'll want to select the NAT + Proxy mode setting for NAT Reflection.

Without this setting enabled, I was able to access my Plex server just fine from mobile devices and other computers on my home network (I think they use service discovery and connect directly with the server over the LAN), and Sonos was able to retrieve basic data about artists, albums, and track names (though I think that was being proxied by Plex), but no album art would appear and tracks would not play. With this setting enabled, all is now working properly.

It comes down to the fact that Sonos is trying to access your Plex server using the WAN IP address of the router. But without NAT Reflection turned on, my router seemed to be ignoring such requests since they were coming from the same network that the Plex server is on.
