Unnecessary transcoding (ALAC, others?) on Sonos?

$

Hi folks, really glad to see the Plex app on Sonos as it solves my two biggest gripes with the Sonos library support - 1) Sort Order tag support and 2) allowing multiple libraries (to sub-divide big collections).

I've got Plex server running on a Synology DS115, which works great from the Sonos library. But from the Plex app for Sonos, it's unable to keep a stream running. Some digging and I figured out that the app must be transcoding (which the little NAS CPU can't keep up with). My files are mostly in Apple Lossless (ALAC) or FLAC, with some in high-bitrate MP3.

The MP3 files play without issue, and with some testing the FLAC files seem to work. ALAC doesn't. All of the above are natively supported by Sonos, so no transcoding is needed - but it appears the app is doing it. I can't tell if FLAC files are being transcoded (since they seem to work and there's no status I can find that says if it's playing MP3 or FLAC).

Can someone confirm that the Sonos Plex app is playing FLAC files without transcoding? As long as that's done natively, I'll convert my ALAC files to FLAC - no problem!

Cheers,
Jeff

Sonos / Plex and lossless playback

I was excited by the Plex/Sonos announcement, particularly about the part that stated that you can stream lossless files. I only just noticed this sentence in What media formats are supported?

Other audio formats such as FLAC or ALAC will be transcoded by your Plex Media Server to be compatible.

So I guess this means the Plex Server will downsample FLAC/ALAC files to 320kbps MP3s before passing it through Sonos. Is that correct? If so, can we expect lossless playback through Plex at some point, or will that have to continue to happen by playing files directly?

Full Support for DSD Files (.dsf) and tags

Great that Sonos and Plex have come together! Finally!

It appears that Plex does transcode my DSD files (I use .dsf as it supports ID3v2 tags) and it plays them via my Plex Android app. I don't get the transcoding and playback, however, to Sonos. My high bitrate FLAC files do work. Is this something to come? Ideally, Plex should convert all FLAC, DSD, PCM, etc to simple CD standard for Sonos.

Also, please let Plex respect embedded tags in .dsf files. This includes the folder/cover art as well. Can it also look at the "folder.jpg" too in a directory and grab that? My stuff is tagged completely and Plex seems to ignore it.

Unable to play - File cannot be found

Hello,

I have my Plex Media Server running on a Nvidia Shield TV, and I recently ran into a weird issue with Sonos playback. I had a setup with everything working, but I had to factory reset my Shield. I re-configured the Plex Media Server exactly as it was, except for one thing: I left the default server name ("SHIELD Android TV") instead of "SHIELD", as it used to be called before the factory reset.

Since then, I am unable to play any file on my Sonos system using the Plex service. From the Sonos controller, I can browse all albums, playlists without any problem, but whenever I try to play a file, I get an error saying "Unable to play - File cannot be found. I tried rebooting all my Sonos players, rebooting my SHIELD and my router, but it made no difference. Is this a known issue with the Sonos public beta?

Thanks!

Sonos playlist limit of 100?

Hello,

I'm experimenting a bit with a Plex/Sonos setup and most works fine. With a bit of trouble I've managed to get Plex to import all playlists from an iTunes XML file. However, while the Plex webapp shows 243 playlists, in Sonos I've counted only 100. Is this a known and intended limit or is something going wrong there.

Kind regards, Maarten

For those who can't get it to work...

I'm aware a lot of people trying to use Sonos and Plex together for the first time may be able to see their Plex music library within Sonos but won't be able to play any music from it.

Despite setting up port forwarding / UpNP, the biggest culprit appears to be this NAT reflection business and having to set it up on compatible routers.

Whilst a vast majority of users won't have a clue what any of this, my question is whether anyone has found a workaround to-date?

Even for those who have some understanding of this internal / external IP address stuff, seems quite a lot of routers don't have the option of configuring NAT reflection on board. This is my case and I can't get a router which has this option as all the broadband providers in my country do not allow 3rd party routers.

The project is still in beta and despite another thread touching on the lack of updates, this is a fairly major issue and at this stage, I would have hoped the Plex team might have gotten some way in getting around it. Or at least to inform users there is no way in getting around it without a router capable of configuring NAT reflection.

Sonos Unable To Connect

I have setup sonos with a connection to plex, and plex authorizes it perfectly fine.

I can access my plex install via my external ip and the port.

However Sonos wont play return any playlists, artists, or albums, it works fine for other services.

My setup has a pfSense firewall with NAT rules for the ports described here (https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201543147-What-network-ports-do-I-need-to-allow-through-my-firewall), my PMS Is installed on server 2012 r2 running version 1.2.3.2914.

Someone suggested enabling NAT+Proxy reflection on the 32400 nat rule. but no joy :(

Sonos/PLEX Out Of Beta Testing

I responded to an email sent to me by Sonos on November 01, 2016 welcoming me to the Beta 7.0 program. I thought I was still participating in the Sonos/PLEX beta program so I responded to the email;
The Sonos/Plex beta program was announced July 20, 2016 and in 100+ days, there's been no updates or responses to beta testers comments/suggestions/complaints from Sonos or Plex. The silence is deafening! It's tough to participate in a beta when there's no communication.

The response from Dave P. of Sonos Customer Care;
Thank you for contacting Sonos Customer Care today. I apologize for the wait, but I can happily inform you that PLEX is out of the Beta stage and is now fully supported on Sonos! If you have any questions or problems while setting this Service up, please let us know.

I obviously missed the announcement that the Sonos/PLEX integration was out of the beta stage. It feels good knowing that all the hours spent by the Sonos/PLEX beta users during this time resulted in such a great product. After this experience, I think I'll pass on participating in any more Sonos betas.

Is anything happening with this beta?

Simple question- has this been ditched?

It doesn't work and there has been no comment from Plex.

So what's happening?

  • Add Moodmixes
  • Move Mixes to the top level menu, rather than into the "More .." submenu
  • Make it possible for mixes to optionally add X number of songs to the Sonos queue
  • Optionally also allow plex clients access to the songs being played via the Sonos client

How do I authorize my Sonos account?

I am trying to add Plex as a music service on Sonos, using my iOS Sonos controller app. As I go through the steps, I get to one that says "Please use the following code to authorize your account: XXXX" Instead of "XXXX" it gives me a unique code each time I try the setup. Presumably I am supposed to take the code and go to my Plex app or server and authorize my Sonos account to access my Plex server library. But I don't find any place to enter this code in Plex.

I am still relatively new to Plex and perhaps I am overlooking something obvious. Can someone please give me idiot-proof steps to authorize my Sonos account?

Plex Media Server Version 0.9.15.2.1663-7efd046 is running on my Mac Pro with OSX 10.7.5.
Plex Web with Firefox 48.0.2
Sonos Controller for iPhone version 6.4.8
Sonos Play 5 firmware version 6.4.2

Thank you!

Discussion about cloud-based Sonos integration

$

Following up from a comment on the blog, you asked that I discuss my concerns about the way Plex integrates with Sonos in the context of these typical concerns:

(A) the current Plex-Sonos service is broken for me, and it seems like the "cloud" service provider might be responsible
(B) the current Plex-Sonos service feels slow, and it seems like the "cloud" service provider might be responsible
(C) from a privacy perspective, I don't want my music library information to go through Plex
(D) I have a Sonos in a location that has no Internet access, and I want Plex-Sonos to work there

I don't have any issue with (A) and (B). I'd say (C) is a minor concern, though like most members of western civilization in the 21st century, I've long given up on the idea that I actually have any privacy. It mostly has to do with (D), and (E): complexity, and necessity.

Bear in mind I have long, long history with streaming music. I was one of the first owners of a Squeezebox back in 1995. All I have ever wanted out of Sonos is to be as good as that was, 20 years ago. I only got a Sonos a couple years ago because it because too much effort to keep the Squeezebox stuff going -- from both a hardware and software perspective -- and there was no support for modern streaming services (other than Spotify). Generally I have been happy with that decision, but I miss many things about my old setup. The basic service and features was actually much better than what I have now - in terms of plugin support, flexibility, quality, apps, and even remote access.

So I have to think about this holisitcally. If my internet service is down, I can't play my music. If you (Plex) decide to end your partnership with Sonos, I can't play my music. If you go out of business, I can't play my music. If your cloud service is temporarily down, I can't play my music.

At the end of the day, the necessity to interact with a cloud service to just play music using a client that can work without internet access (Sonos), from a server that can work without Internet access (Plex), in a closed network, seems silly and adds a significant point of failure with many dependencies. Sure, most of the time everything will just work, but there will definitely be times it does not, and I expect it will be when I'm having a dinner party and it'll be really annoying.

Is this going to be a dealbreaker for me? Well I already have a lifetime Plex pass so, obviously not, I'm glad for the service. If you can improve it to be a lot better than Subsonic is now, e.g. by adding Genre support, better scanning (e.g. show the letter while scrolling), and in my fantasy world, add some Logitech Media Server-like features such as plugins for creating playlists dynamically, then I'll most likely switch to Plex as my primary private library server. Though I definitely won't uninstall Subsonic from my computer so I have a backup plan. It's just a bit disappointing to have something that ought to be nice and clean have a whole bunch of external dependencies.

Feature requests

Thank you for creating Plex on Sonos! I have some requests having used the player briefly today.

  1. Please add a persistent notification for the android app. When I play music and then go to the home screen, there is no evidence that Sonos is playing; I have to open the app from the app drawer again. This also means that there are no lockscreen controls.
  2. Please update the playing/played status. Currently the Recently Played function is not updated.
  3. Please allow the Discover function to be added to Sonos favourites. The Playlists function can be added and I find it useful.
  4. The Live Mix option seems to be limited to about 25 tracks and it returns to the first track once it reaches the end, whereas the option from within Plex includes 100 tracks in the mix.
  5. Selection by Genre
  6. Selection of Artist by letter of the alphabet
  7. Selection by Directory/Folder
  8. Search/sort by folder
  9. Search/sort by genre
  10. More robust ID3 tagging and conversion table (like how are you creating track artist?)

Not Working

Have just set this up, not really working for me. Anybody had much luck ?

I can browse into my library but as soon as i click on artist or playlist 99% of the time it just says it cannot connect to the server. Occasionally i do get a list back though.

If i search in the search box for an artist they are found and displayed slightly more often, but wholly unreliable.

Cant wait for it to be working properly though. It might just make me stay with Plex Pass !

Sonos Fails to play anything from PLEX

I am running a dedicated server (QNAP) with my PLEX server on a Win 10 machine. Running a single network drive with audio in it. Plex has finished loading all data and Sonos Win 10 Desktop control shows it but when I select a song or album to play I get a popup error "Unable to play xxxxx - unable to connect to Plex".

I have both FLAC and MP3 files on the drive and nothing works. There is also no album covers showing either.

And it might be important, but I am not running a standard flavor of Sonos (controllers or unit SW).

Some Songs (flac) not playing, Artwork not shown

I give Plex a chance on my Sonos System. But is not stabil running.
My Songs are lossless in flac.
When Play a Album, some songs are always skipped.

While a Song is playing , later 10 Seconds the Artwork is missing

Is there any Change to fix this ?

Sonos, music playing - No activity in Plex

Hi!

I just started using Plex via my Sonos system, and I noticed that I cannot see any activity in plex. Music activity is shown if playback is done via the Plex app on both Android and iOS. The same goes for web-playback.

Is this Sonos-related? Or, can activity monitoring be added for Sonos as well?

Plex integration with Sonos

Following the release of the latest Sonos upgrade which enables Spotify to play directly to Sonos (a brilliant, long awaited feature). Can the same integration be made for Plex to play directly to Sonos (rather than through Plex within the Sonos app)?
